My Art

The duality of it all...

My black and white pieces often lean toward detailed portraits or darker visions from my imagination. The works in color, mostly oil pastels with some mixed media, capture moments and scenes, whether real or imagined. I don’t like being confined to one or the other. Some ideas belong in black and white for their simplicity and weight, while others come alive through color. Some days I’m drawn to the pull of contrast, and other days it’s all about how color shapes the mood. Coming from a design background, I’ve worked on projects that felt restrictive, and I’ve promised myself my art will never be chained down like that. I hope you enjoy the duality in my work, the balance between control and freedom, shadow and light.

Not to sound cliche, but I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t making art. Drawing has always been my default setting. It’s what took me to art school in San Francisco, and eventually into a design career, something I still do to some degree.

What really brought me back to making my art, though, was my oldest child asking me to teach them how to be a better artist. That moment rekindled something I’d put on the back burner for years: how much I enjoyed just making kick ass art just because I want to.
